Off to LA!

Time to head to the LA Marathon to see how all the road runners do it! I’ll be hanging in Hollywood and working at the Moeben booth at the LA Marathon Expo this weekend. Hal Koerner, Erik Skaggs, and Jenn Shelton are my other 3 comrades who’ll be enjoying the show. It’ll be nice to run in the green hills with the Speedgoat of theYear. Maybe I’ll throw him off the trail and give myself a better chance at the Dos Lunas 100 in a few weeks. Hal and Erik will race at Way Too Cool the following weekend. We’ll post the Speedgoat odds next Thursday.

This weekend check out the Old Pueblo 50 Mile. It’s a classic down near the Mexico border. Stay tuned for a race report from Pueblo and of course the weekend in LA.

Trail Race Season heating up!

Three cool trail races this weekend! The “I’m a little bit haggered” Hagg Lake 50k, TheMt. Cheaha 50kto the summit of Mt. Cheaha, and the Cross Timbers 50mi, in Texas.

Mt Cheaha looks to be the most competitive with Tom Possert, DeWayne Satterfield, Dink Taylor and Jamie Dial. I’m taking Taylor by 5 over Satterfield, Possert and Dial not far behind. I’ll have results for all 3 races as soon as I recieve them! The killer sale at BC.com only lastsuntil the 29th! Check out the killer deals, only the best Outdoor Gear!

RED HOT 50K was as expected…RED HOT!

Moab’s Red Hot 50k was hotter than the summer desert sun as Skaggs and Krupicka made it look easy…once again. 4:03 was the winning time, 22 minutes faster than my old record of 4:25. Conditions were perfect as usual in the mid 40s. I ended up 7th with the same time as last year. A few fast boys from Colorado and CU stuck with a torrid pace early and gave Tony and Kyle a run for it..but without luck!

The womens race was equally exciting as Susanna Beck ripped across the slickrock in a dual with Anita Ortiz of La Sportiva. Susanna ran away the last 4 miles edging out Anita running a super fast 4:28. Ian Torrence caught me at 29 miles and encouraged me not to get “chicked”… gotta like encouragement from a great friend and competitor. Ian did drop me too, but I drank more beers at the end! -Speedgoat Karl

Speedgoat Karl’s odds at the Red Hot 50k

Kyle Skaggs is the no-brainer pick at 3-1.

Kyle should be able to run away with it on his 22 year old legs. I’ll givehim a run for it, but will have a tough time hanging unless Kyle starts wandering around the desert aimlessly. I’ll give myself a 5-1 chance if I can run a speedy race similiar to last year. Ian Torrenceand his local knowledge will keep him 7-1 odds. Duncan Callahan and Ryan Burch are sitting to make the most cash at 10-1 each.

The Women’s Race

Darcy Africa is back after last year’s stellar sub-5 hour run, but will be challenged hard this year by Anita Ortiz. I give both women 5-2 odds. Darcy has more Ultra experience, but Anita has more speed. Helen Cospolich proved she is a goat as well as she took home the $100 bucks at the Speedgoat 50k making it to the top of Snowbird first…6-1. High altitude superstar Emily Baer (sleeping at 9318′) from Silverton, CO gets a 7-1 chance, while Liz Irvine, last year’s Wasatch 100 winner is given 9-1.

Needless to say, this race is a HOT ONE! As long as the snow stays away!

Go to Mas50.com to check out the race. We’ll post results when I return to SLC.

Fleet Footed Brimhall makes me 2 for 3

Josh had exactly what I expected with Kelly Mortenson nipping at his heels at the Pemberton 50k. Josh recorded one of the fastest winning times with a swift 3:21.39. Kelly finished strong at 3:26.09.

In the womens race, Jamie Donaldson slipped under 4:20 running 4:18.11. 15+ minutes ahead of Juliet Morgan and Honey Albrecht who duked it out for 2nd.

Chances are the Speedgoat 50k won’t be that fast! la-sportiva-logo.jpg

Full results are in the comments section in the post below…enjoy! -Speedgoat Karl

Pemberton 50k this weekend!

Brimhall is my favorite for a fast one in the desert. Josh will probably be chased by some mystery man…we love to see it! Paul Dewitt’s record is slick at 3:11.55 on the fast track! Enjoy the dirt people! I’m over the snow-runnin!

We’re runnin’ on snow at the Speedgoat 50K!

Moab next week for the Red Hot 50k, hope it’sa steamer…look for the odds here on Thursday. We’ll see who I pick to win, it’s a no-brainer…………Speedgoat Karl

Pacheco wins Ultra #2…Rocky Raccoon

Jorge Pacheco, without Anton Krupicka at his heels, nailed down another stellar time at RR with a textbook 14:12. The number is up to beat for the fastest 100 of the year. Jorge also won the Avalon 50 a few weeks earlier to make it 2 for 2. The race for Speedgoat of the Year 2008 is on!

Jen Davis took home the women’s crown with a comfy 20:01. Jenn Shelton stayed out of this one, but her record of 14:49 remains set in stone.

100 mile race #2 is now in the books. Susitna is next in the frozen Tundra of Alaska! The Speedgoat 50k course now sits buried under a150″ base. The epic race in Utah may be on frozen tundra in July!

Here comes another Storm!

The snow continues to fly in Utah! My last snow report for Snowbird Ski Resort listed 271″ YTD. That post was January 23rd. The bird now sits at 348″ YTD, today, February 3rd. Just another 77″ the last week and a half! Freakin’ out of control! Another storm is pushing in to dump another couple feet! Not to mention it’s all Utah Fluff, no Sierra Cement for us.

The Speedgoat 50K might be under snow at this rate! Click the link to register.

Speedgoat of the Year results will be posted soon at Wasatchspeedgoat.com. Nearly 4000 votes came in, Scott is waiting for the software to load all the votes, to make sure the skull goes to the right goat!
