March 15th on Chuckanut Mountain 350 runners toe the line for the fast, flat start, then will enjoy trail for 19 miles. The final 6 are a fast flat finish!
Mens Race Scott Jurek 3-1. His fast Way Too Cool time tells us he’s in shape even with only one week recovery Brian Morrison 7-2. Right on Scott’s heels, and still has the power to squeak by Scott if he has a good day. Ryne Melcher 7-1. Fast times all around in the past and should hang close behind Matt Simms, Josh Mulkey, Bryan Dayton and Sam Thompson should round out the top 7! These Four guys’ odds are all 12-1 Womens Race Devon Crosby-Helms 2-1. Hands down the fastest in the field, should prevail with ease Kathleen Harri 5-1.Previous winner has her hands full but won’t be far behind Alison Hanks 10-1. Local Speedster, and should be challenged by other local speedster… Erika Daligcon also at 10-1 for the “show” position. Let’s not forget Anne Theissen, former RD’s pick to “show”. These odds are by no means intended to be used for illegal betting purposes!Check out the Utah Ultrarunning Camp on July 9-13, with Meltzer, Kimball and Torrence for the crash course in efficient Ultrarunning techniques. TEAM INOV-8 looking strong here
Women:
1. Crosby-Helms
Men:
1. Dayton if he can show that 50km speed he has produced in the late summer in years past. Although this won’t be a peak race for him.
Bryan Dayton will win… hands down! There is no such thing as a “peak race” for Dayton, he runs fast in every race! Dayton has Skaggs speed!
women’s winner will be Nicola Gildersleeve from North Van or she will be in the top 3 guaranteed and one of the top five men will be Hassan Loffti pour also form North Van as trails in BC are harsh.
Karl, as race co-founder I am an avid observer of the Chuckanut. I won’t give odds (I’ll never be mistaken for a Vegas bookie) but don’t neglect Matt Simms, always a top finisher here with a better best time than Bryan Dayton. Scott J. usually uses this race as more or less training for the big things he always does later in the season (he isn’t even in the top twenty all time here) but can race as well as he wants any time, and Brian Morrison is fifth all time here, ahead of Dayton and Simms. I also admire Annie Thiessen among the women, who will be in the top four or five. Also, I wouldn’t bet against Kathleen Harri (one you mentioned) who is a very tough comopetitor but who has recently had a baby (a valid cut into training time!)
I appreciate all the input to help with the odds. I don’t know everyone, but have been working on it. The new names added to the list will go in the data bank! -Karl
For those not mentioned in Speedgoats top picks: You can still win this thing! Who knows when a dark horse may suddenly step into the spotlight.

Karl, after seeing what happened at Cool, it looks like all you need to
do is look for runners who reside in Oregon.
Ain’t that the truth Brian! Oregonians have certainly done well lately, Pre’s stomping grounds!
Well, the Speedgoat called this one perfectly! You picked both winners. Dayton won, Jurek was less than two minutes back but in third place (23 yr. old Peter Ellis got 2nd), Morrison was 4th, and Simms was sixth. Crosby-Helms led the girls, Harri was a close second less than four minutes back, and Thiessen was third and closing fast. Gildersleeve was 4th but 15 minutes back from Devon. rain only at the beginning, sloppy mud, no wind. Good day!
