The USATF National Championship is on the line at White River….the Scott McCoubrey 50 mile adventure!
The boys: This is a tough one, a very stacked field of roadies and trail dogs! Mike Wardian 5-2. His speed is there, and if he has some left, should run away down that nasty road. Brian Morrison 5-2. Seems it’s his turn to run a fast one and he knows this course well. Greg Crowther 3-1. Greg, like Mike has superior speed, hasn’t raced much and is likely to be near the front all day….if he has a good day. Hal Koerner 4-1. His 2:35 marathon speed is certainly fast enough to hang on this route, and is the best technical runner of the other 3 above him.. Mark Lundblad 5-1. Kills it on the road, but we’ll see what happens when some roots become part of the road. Josh Brimhall 5-1. He’s run right around 7 hours here…he’ll be in it! Paul Dewitt 6-1. If Paul sticks with a good race plan, he can catch them all on the Skookum Flats trail at the end. Jasper Halekas 8-1. The only thing Jasper lacks a little is raw speed, but he’ll power right through it and get in under 7:30. Jonathan Basham 8-1. The sleeper from the East coast will also be in the early Peleton. William Emerson 10-1. If he can bring back some old form, he could run top 3…Previous winner here around 7 hours. The Ladies: Susannah Beck 7-4. Her speed will prevail, and her experience is now intact. She’ll run away with it early and win by 12 minutes. Kami Semick 7-2. She’s next in line if Susannah doesn’t have her day, but it’ll be tough to hang on that dusty road if the race is close. Prudence Le’Heureux 6-1. She’ll crack top 3, but that’s it. Ronda Sundermeier 8-1. Needs a great day to slip into the top 3, but she’ll run a fast time either way. Shannon Willford 12-1. Doesn’t have the speed as those few up front, but is in good shape, and looking for a good tune-up run before Wasatch. And on the tougher course….The Speedgoat 50K! Men’s Race: Nate McDowell 3-2. If he makes the drive, he’ll run away with it, his skills are far better than anyone around this weekend. Erik Storheim 5-1. Erik has shown real promise with a close to 7 hour 50 mile PR, but the boy in front of him will be gone. Adam Cassaday 6-1. The boy from the east is the sleeper. He’s got some speed, but he better be able to hike fast. The women: Anita Ortiz 3-2. She’ll be the first to the topfor the $100 sprint bonus, and never look back. She may win it outright if Nate doesn’t make the drive. Jenn Coulter 5-1. Jenn brings altitude training to the plate, just like Anita, she’ll hang early and take the “bridesmaid” spot easily Sarah Evans 7-1. Alta Local, knows the course almost as well as I, local knowledge will help! I’m out the door to run, then I’llpack up the RV for the Speedgoat 50K command center!Blogroll

Two guys that you overlooked: 1. Justin Ricks and 2. Brad Mitchell. Remember Justin at Red Hot 50K? He’s the guy who came in 3rd behind the two wonder boys. He’s done well in all his other races this year so he is certainly the sleeper here. Brad is coming off of an injury but has proven speed (under 3.45 @ Way Too Cool), I wouldn’t bet against him here. Last, Paul DeWitt is not running (coming back from injury)
Monica Ochs should do well at White River. She’ll be top 5 or better.
Karl,
I wish you many blessings on the AT adventure. I told my parents that you would be going through Winchester, VA. They were interested in seing you , rooting you on and if you or your crew wanted some home cooked food, my mom used to be an excellent caterer. Anyway,
I am looking forward to following your adventure as I train for my first 50 mile event in early October.
Mark Lundblad can run with the best on technical trails. He’s consistent, smart, and an opportunist. He could pull this off. And, isn’t Anne Lundblad running this too? At the 50 mile usatf championships last September Mark won in 6:03, Anne won in 6:36… not a technical race, but I’ve seen both run like goats on gnarly courses as well.
Tim
Didn’t see Anne’s name on the list. Back to the Speedgoat 50K prep…..
Nope Anne is not running, yes after doing training runs with both Anne and Mark a few weeks ago, Mark is in solid shape. Don’t forget Jason Bryant to be in the mix as well. He’s in fine shape too.
Ah, I thought she said both of them were running it, but that was at Bull Run Run in April.
I second Brennen that Monica will run well, potentially top-3. Though the lack of technical is good for Susannah, Kami will win it in near or sub-course record time.
Jasper should get higher odds. 2:38 marathon is pretty good “raw speed”. He’ll be top 3…..
I bet Kami beats Suzannah by 30 minutes
Kami is certainly the “readers choice”. I just think if Susannah has a decent climb to Suntop, she’ll be gone. That’ll be the crux for sure. We’ll know after Suntop.
I’m going to bet that Michael Sanders has a good race and places in the top 5. He is a really good runner and is quite fit right now.
Oh, I think Suzannah will have a great race. I just think Kami’s in rare air right now.

13 minutes and change behind Hal?
Karl,I appreciate the optimism. I hope you don’t have too much riding on me though. I’ve been in a real “funk” since the cancellation of States. I’ll go out and give it what I’ve got, but I just haven’t had much drive lately. The upside is that I’m pretty well rested. Good luck with the Speedgoat 50k.
If he has it in him race day, Shawn Bostad is crazy fast. I’ll be rooting for him at WR.
Susannah Beck wins the women’s race in new CR! Seven minutes faster than Nikki’s time. Kami second.
Wardian wins in 6:50, Adam Lint, Jasper third, Crowther fourth.
White River Results:
1. Michael Wardian, 2. Adam Lint, 3.Jasper Halekas , 4.Greg Crowther
I volunteered at WR50 at an aid station and the results are:
Mike Wardian (6:52)
Adam Lint
Jasper Halekas
And for the women:
Susannah Beck (7:42)
Kami Semick
Annie Thiessen
Show’s what I know. Nice race, Suzannah.
I got lucky again! McDowell smokes the Speedgoat 50K….5:43.41. Anita Ortiz wins the womens race in third place overall running 6:02.33.
I don’t think I’ve ever been cursed at this much after the Speedgoat! It was epic!
The Speedgoat runners may be cursing at you now but they will look back and love the race in a few days. I can’t imagine running a 50k with 10,000 feet of climbing. OUCH! Also Ian is correct, Susannah won the race in 7:32, a course record, not 7:42 (my typo). It was a cool weather day at WR, but windy at times, which caused a lot of dust on the dry trails and roads.
Karl -
Nice to finally meet you, and thanks for the introduction to Snowbird! That was one heck of a course! Looking forward to the AT assault,
- Greg
Hey,
I had a painful, miserable, agonizing time at your race yesterday - thanks alot!
Seriously though, the course was beautiful, the volunteers were awesome (even for an ultra) and other than the middle 30 miles I had a great time.
I still can’t believe you managed to make the course harder than last year too. Mary Ellen gulch was brutal, I wished I had just stayed in Roch’s (superb) aid station and sucked on popsicles instead.
Even though I had such a rough time, I know I’ll be back again as long as the race exists - which I hope is a long time.
Thanks Karl!
Another killer Speedgoat race. I downloaded my Garmin into the MotionBase agent and it determined that the course was 30 miles and over 13,000 feet of climbing. Already looking forward to next years version.
Here is the link to my race data:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6367550
Correction to the previous post. MotionBase indicated the course was 28 miles not 30. I don’t think many runners would complain if you leave the course at the current distance and call it good.
What is new is the toolbox that hybrid organizations draw from. ,
