TRT 100 and the Vermont 100 up next!

The USATF 100 Mile Trail Championship on the line!

no_headphones_small.jpg

He kinda looks like Mr. Bill!

And the odds are:

Erik Skaden: 5-2. He was ready for Western and will likely be ready forthis one
Jon Olsen: 7-2. Not far behind Erik, these two guys should battle it out.
Ian Torrence: 12-1. Claims he’s not quite readyto race up front, but I know he has it in him, every time we run, he kicks my ass!
The women’s race gets good too!
Nikki Kimball: 3-1. Simply put, she’s the best, but this course could test her raw speed, a few speedsters will be following.
Jenn Shelton: 7-2. She’s probably the one with the most speed, and if she nails it, she’ll run away withit. The technicality is the only thing that can slow her down, and I’m not sure how technical it is.
Bev Abbs: 6-1. In it all the way, she can win too, if she has a good run!
Connie Gardner: 8-1. Better at the smoother and flatter stuff, but who knows!
Jenny Capel: 9-1. It’s certainly her turn to win something, she could easily make the podium…..if they have one.

The Vermont 100, an old classic!

Glen Redpath: 5-2. I’m thinking it’s his turn to show his speed, and Vermont is essentially a dirt road race.
Bradley Mongold: 4-1. He showed uslots of promise early season, and this race fits his style. Still a rookie at 100 though, he could blow early if he’s not careful
Andy Jones-Wilkins: 5-1. Andy always has a good race in him, he’ll run solid as usual and win by slight default if #1 and #2 suffer.
Joe Kulak: 7-1. We’d like to see some of that old Vermont speed return, but he might be consuming some Long Trail Ale, it could slow him down a bit.
Kevin Sullivan: 10-1. Not as much experience as those few others, but the potential isthere.

The ladies:

I only see two right now:

Devon Crosby-Helms: 3-2. Should be a no-brainer for her to win, she just needs to run smart and not let the fast early pace get her.
Michelle Barton: 5-1. She’ll be styling in her Moeben Sleeves, the ice in the sleeve trick could keep her cool and give her a chance at a win in the Green Mountain State.
Diana Fitzpatrick: 9-1. Experience will take her to the top 3, and potentially even a win.

I may have missed a few here, so help, I’ll update tomorrow if needed.

Today was the last day for the Speedgoat 50k apps to come in, but I’ll take more as we have not yet reached our limit, so send it in and come run the sickest 50k in the US! The goats will be out in force on July 26th.

Karl… I’ll bet you one of those Long Trail Ales that Jack Pilla wins this years VT100 and in doing so.. becomes the first Vermont Male ever to do so.

  2. 2 Brad Mitchell

AJW for the repeat win at VT - He is primed and ready to rip!

  3. 3 Bryon Powell

You can bump up the odds for Glen, Andy, and Joe… Mongold is a no go. He’s got bigger fish to fry later this summer. A smart bet at VT100 would have Kevin Sullivan to place. Oh, and Andy takes this one.

  4. 4 Bev

I think Diana Fitzpatrick has areal shot at Vermont. She has experience at 100 miles and, I could be wrong about this but, I don’t think either of the other two do. She’s tough and will be one to watch regardless.

  5. 5 Speedgoat Karl

SJ, I’ll have one at Sherburn Pass, but it’ll be on you this time! I’ll add the other two in the morning, thanks for the help. Caoi

Does Mother Nature get any odds in TRT?? I’ve had enough of her!!

  7. 7 FastEd

No doubt AJW for VT - Under 15 hours for Andy.

  8. 8 Bedrock

Any update on how the camp went?

  9. 9 Grae Van Hooser

    Hey Karl,
New idea for the AT website, WHERESKARLSWEBSIGHT.com.

    Karl,

Right on with the TRT odds. Throw in Michael Buchanan, Mike Wolfe, Jason Ostrom, Sander Nelson, and Sean Meissner as contenders on the mens side. They’ll pick up the pieces if Erik and Jon run each other into the ground. My money is on those two for 1-2, though. My record is going down in flames - the only question is by how much. I see a time in the high 16’s to low 17’s definitely possible.

For the ladies, this is one of the best fields of the year. I actually like Jenn Shelton in this one. It’s really hard to bet against Nikki, but the TRT course is very non-technical. If Jenn can handle some altitude, her speed should pay big dividends. Jenny Capel is the only one with course knowledge - maybe enough to get her a top three?

Thanks Jasper, I’ll add them when I return from my speedgoat run, in a few hours. It’s gonna be cool to watch this one, hopefully the USATF can post online regularly? Do they have the technology….I hope so.

  12. 12 Jasper Halekas

    Karl,

Don’t count on the USATF doing a thing. We’ll be lucky if we see results in a week!

    Hey Karl.

Any chance for a topo of the Speedgoat route - at least the first 10 miles up to Baldy?

    Thanks.

  15. 15 Sherpa John

Tim Roy should also be a name in the top contenders list at VT.

The map is coming, we’ve been out GPSing everything and we’re getting it together. The handwritten map is actually quite accurate though, even though it looks generic, it isn’t. The first climb to the peak consists of a series of 5 actual climbs, each one getting bigger as you get higher. The ascent total for the first climb is 4400′. The vertical rise of the tram is 2900′, so you will run downhill 1500′ vertical before actually reaching Hidden Peak. Baldy is a quick scant over from Hidden peak, it only takes 15 minutes tops. Hope that helps, stay tuned, it’s coming. The peak distance at aid #1 is 8.2 miles, Baldy is at 9.0 miles

    Thanks Karl.

I’m not familiar with the Snowbird terrain and just wanted to know how to get 10 miles in up to the top. Looking forward to the race. The topo will be great when you get the chance.

  18. 18 Grae Van Hooser

Your best for TRT results will probably be the untrarunner.net site.

  19. 19 Speedgoat Karl

Funny how the race hasn’t even happened yet and we all believe the results won’t be up right away. I hope we’re all wrong and the USATF gets it up quickly. Good luck to all that are running.

  20. 20 Joel Hatch

    Karl,

Did you receive my app for the SpeedGoat?

  21. 21 Steve

Did anyone look at the Vermont 100 results? Did some folk cut the course or what? sub-12 hours for VT100 seems fishy.

  22. 22 another anon

TRT (second hand results through mostly reputable interweb source - take w/ grain of salt):
Skaden and Wolfe tie, just under 19 hours
    next is Nikki Kimball, 21ish
    then Torrence, 21:50ish
    Olsen drop mi 76

  23. 23 MB

    AJW win’s vermont
    sullivan 2nd
    pilla
    redpath
    lavine
    kulak

    Crosby-Helms for the ladies

  24. 24 JB at VT100

I was Devon’s pacer so I got to see the race unfold on the men’s side for the first 70 miles. AJW, Glen Redpath, local fave Jack Pilla, and Boston’er Kevin Sullivan all battling for the top spot through 70. A medical check mishap cost Glen some time at 70, and ultimately AJW and Kevin pulled out the top 2 spots. Jack and Glen were the next two to cross the line.

On the women’s side, Devon took the lead early and never looked back, winning in 18:31. Michelle and Diana were never in contention (Michelle DNFed, and Diana came through at 19:51, third woman, I think) - Kelly Cronin took 2nd, 19 minutes behind Devon, though considering the 2 mile detour we took after Camp 10 Bear, it became a closer race than before the 25 minute ‘extra mileage’ route…

As an aside, Devon was strong through most of the race, and was still pushing - and hammering the flats and downs in the last 30 miles I was running with her… unbelievable talent.

  25. 25 Steve

Thanks for clarifying MB - did not know they would mix the 100K results in with the 100 Mile.

  26. 26 Mike V.

The Skaden/Wolfe tie and Kimball victory are confirmed in a press release on the USATF website:

    http://www.usatf.org/news/view.aspx?duid=USATF_2008_07_21_08_06_26

  27. 27 Dawn

Actually Matt Lavine pulled off 4th in the VT 100. He was close-ish to Devon and my runner as far as Bill’s so he made up a lot of time over very little distance. Say hi to Linda for us.

  28. 28 Mike V.

    Hey Karl,

I can’t imagine how swamped you must be with the Speedgoat this weekend and then the imminent departure east for the AT assault…but wondering if you are pondering odds for the White River 50 miler:

    http://www.seattlerunningcompany.com/WR50/participants.html

Looks like some speedy folks. Curious if you handicap your own race as well? :) Good luck this weekend and, of course, with preparations with the AT.

  29. 29 Speedgoat Karl

You are right Mike, I am hammered with things to do, but I didn’t forget White River, that’s coming up in 20 minutes…finally
