Speedgoat 50k Applications available here for the toughest 50k in the US.

I managed to squeak out one 100 mile win at the Coyote Two Moon 100 last March,  keeping my streak of consecutive years with at least one 100 mile win going at 6 years in a row, I narrowly missed a win in 2002 running 2nd at Wasatch.   My streak of winning at least two ultras in a calendar year ended this year at a solid 10 years.   We’ll see if I can start a new streak this year.

The Speedgoat 50K went off much smoother in it’s second year, the course is now set in stone and won’t have to be re-routed any more.  A big relief.  Nate McDowell holds the mens record , Anita Ortiz holds the womens fastest time.  It’s nice to know the records are not soft, only in it’s second year. It’ll be interesting to see what some of the younger fast boys can run here…if they dare show up.  Some day I even hope to run…for the masters record…of course.

Next year’s plans are much like an Ultrarunners standard race schedule.  I’m staying more on the local side.   One more run at the Way Too Cool 50k to see if I can still break 4 hours, I’d be happy with that.

First, I’ll run in Moab, cuz’ the course is too perfect.

The Massannutten 100 will be the focus race of the spring, I’m hoping to run well there and try and keep that 100 mile streak alive.

Hardrock one more time cuz’ that course is too perfect too.  I decided to bag Western and stick with what I like best…big, high altitude hills.  It’s simply more fun for me on that venue.

I will then come back to my home turf and run Wasatch again, I’m looking forward to it already.  My wife Cheryl has her name in the hat, so I may run without a crew….one step tougher=better.

And a look at the new Bear 100 course, still the best kept secret of all.

I’ll continue to do odds for the better races, and of course the ”Speedgoat of the Year” award will be decided……..somehow.  I’m working on it, but I’m a little behind……such is life.

No more hibernation, it’s time to train for WTC.

dang there… now you got me thinking a bit about wasatch.

  2. 2 AJW

Great to see you’re back. I’m going to try for that 4 hour WTC as well. Fun stuff!

I also am contemplating Leadville to complete the Rocky Mountain Slam again, but I can enter Leadville later…I hope. Having a real job right now is consuming some real time.

I also am finally feeling excited to run. I’ve only run a few times in the past few weeks. Moab will be the indicator of fitness level.

    I’m over this hibernation shit!

only 2 weeks between wasatch and bear this year. that should be a fun double.

  5. 5 Speedgoat Karl

Is that even a double? Two weeks is a long time! Bear is hard to resist, the course is great.

Happy New Year, Karl. And good luck in all your ventures in ‘09

Thanks for posting your plans, Karl. Looking forward to seeing you at WTC then! I was the last guy to break 4 hours last year, will be fun to try again although additional years don’t really help us competing with the youngsters, do they?

All the best for 2009, especially your 100-milers!

    Jean.

Hey Karl! It’s been fun following your exploits! My goal race for the year will be the Bear 100! You’re right, it is one of the best kept secrets out there (along with the Superior Sawtooth 100 of course ;-)! I’m really looking forward to the new course. The last time I was out there was when I crewed for Kim and you won overall and Kim won the first 100 she ever ran. The colors out there were amazing!

    Bests for a great 2009!

p.s. Karl, you need to run Superior Sawtooth 100 one of these days. You would love the course. Let me know if you’d like to run it, and we can hook you up with lodging and whatever else here in Duluth.

  9. 9 Speedgoat Karl

Superior is on the list, this year I am just running more locally to save $$$$. It has great potential next year if I don’t make the AT again. See you at Bear Andy!

  10. 10 wynn

I second Andy’s comment. As my first 100 in 2007 Superior Sawtooth was more than I ever expected in superior beauty and superior challenge! getting up to the northshore is always good times. The 50km and 25km spring Superior races are also goodies.

    Hey Karl,

Hopefully you can start a streak of not winning so many races so the rest of us will have a shot! Just kidding. I hope you have a great 2009.

    Mike

  12. 12 Speedgoat Karl

Oh, don’t you worry, the streak will end…all good things come to an end. But I’ll keep trying.

  13. 13 Bedrock

Best of luck this year Karl. Hope to see you at Massanutten.

  14. 14 Tim Long

    Hey Karl,
Looking forward to running with you at Moab (even if it’s just watching you pull away from me). I’ll also be back at Speedgoat 50k this year but in a volunteer capacity this time (it’s the only way I could gracefully avoid trudging up those endless steep rock bed climbs. You’re going to have a great year! See you next month.
    Tim

  15. 15 Tim Long

a million vertical feet? are you kidding me?!

  16. 16 Speedgoat Karl

Yah, think about it Tim, almost 185 miles straight up. Almost a run to the freakin’ moon. Let me know if you’ll make it to the Speedgoat, you can be one of the many “Ultra stars” who help me out and volunteer!

It will be a good year, see you in Moab!

  17. 17 Tim Long

I’ll be there to help out (at speedgoat), looking forward to it.
    thanks
    tim

  18. 18 Speedgoat Karl

Come early Tim, you can help mark it, I”ll be hammered after Hardrock, and can use all the help possible. Thanks! I’ll put you on the “volunteer list”.

  19. 19 Tim

You bet, especially the part of the course where I ran the wrong direction! It just seemed so much nicer to turn downhill for a change. I couldn’t help myself.
