HURT 100 coming this weekend!

Paul Hopwood is off to a rapid start running the first lap in 3:33, probably one of the fastest laps ever!  Barger is not far behind.  Roes is sitting perfectly about 15 minutes back.  I’ll give Paul another lap with the lead until Geoff picks him off.  Barger is tough too, but will fade on the 3rd lap…….we’ll see!

Gotta love the play by play…..Roes took the lead earlier than expected, he probably got bored.  Hopwood is running very well at this point and seems to have been startled by Geoff.  Geoff is gone as far as I’m concerned now.  Watch Goggins creep up on Barger and Hopwood.

ROES KILLS IT AGAIN!!!!    20:28

Matt Estes’ record gets shaved another 15 minutes, now we’ll be talking about breaking 20 hours there.  Scares me to think what Geoff may run at Wasatch this year!  He certainly has proven in every race he’s run that he’s one of the best in sport right now!  Congrats Geoff!

I’m sure Geoff will have a great write-up when he returns to the great white north, check that out in a few days at “Fumbling Towards Endurance”

The real competitive race is Barger and Hopwood duking it on the last lap for 2nd, we’ll see who perseveres now that the course is ripped up and slicker than zips ass.   Both are on the edge of breaking 24 hours.

Once upon a time everyone thought 24 hours wasn’t breakable………Hah!

Bummed I had to bail on this one, but hey, the economy is bad, right?

Here’s my picks:

Geoff Roes  2-1.  Noone should touch Geoff, his 20:01 at Wasatch was an indicator of how fast he is, not to mention his 5th place showing at the NF 50 in December.  If he’s recovered from that his lead will increase every lap and  he’ll win by 2 hours.
David Goggins  4-1.  He’s next in line, he’s got more experience than the rest and is tougher than everyone.
Dan Barger  6-1.  Dan hasn’t raced many ultras lately, but his adventure racing background makes him worthy of the 3rd spot.
Whit Rambach  8-1.  Will run a solid race, but not quick enough on the greasy rocks.
Jamie Gifford  8-1.  He and Whit will duke it out for 4th place.
Paul Hopwood  12-1.  Previous winner and experienced at HURT, but he’ll have better comp this time and will hope to slip into 5th or better with a good run.
Luis Escobar  14-1.  I don’t think the leader will lap him this time,  he’ll stay on the lead lap
MIke Sweeney 17-1.  Sweeney has won here before, a few years past in a time of 24:55 (I think) so with a good day could slip into the top 5.
Kyle Amos  18-1.  Great 100 mile times last year, but this course is ugly.  He has run well when it’s smooth, but his results on rougher courses puts him at 18-1.   He could be the sleeper though, so watch out boys.

Women:

Suzanna Bon  3-2.  Hands down the fastest here, and I believe she likes mud.
Monica Scholz  5-1.  Another veteran that’ll get it done, but doesn’t have the speed of Suzanna
Kathy D’Onofrio  8-1.  She’ll be in third or better if she runs smart, occasionally she goes out too fast.
Catra Corbett  10-1.  She’s in it for the fun of it, she’ll have the best time.

Tune into the HURT 100 for live updates via the’re website on Saturday July 17-18.

    Karl-

I would add Kyle Amos to your men’s odds. He ran some good 100 mile times last year and should be in the top 5. 2008 100m 18:13:16 Heartland 100 Mile Endurance Run 33 M [detail] Olathe KS

    Did you see

  2. 2 Joy

Sorry, did you see that Mike Sweeney is running?

  3. 3 Speedgoat Karl

Thanks Joy, you are right, I always overlook a few. Not taking anything away from Mike Sweeney, but he’s only run 25 hours there and a few years ago. Granted some of the guys on my list haven’t even run there, so who knows. Amos has run great times on smoother terrain. HURT is as ugly as it gets.

  4. 4 wynn

Yes, go Kyle!! Trail nerds are rooting for ya!

Definitely agree with your picks for first, and would be surprised if they don’t both win. Goggins, however, is somewhat over-rated in my book. Yes, he does good work for his charity, and gets lot of shirt-off magazine spreads, but he seems more hype than talent. I’d be surprised if he finishes top three.

  6. 6 gmack

Geoff has the speed to win by 3+ hours, but the HURT course is in mediocre shape and the weather forecast calls for rain the 2 days before the race. If you’ve never been on the course, it’s hard to appreciate how tough it can be.

Also, knowing you can bail early and get credit for the 100K leads to quitting. Like a lot of fast runners before, Geoff will ‘win’ the 100K and the 100M will be won by whoever can persevere some sloppy trail conditions.

  7. 7 footfeathers

On board with majority of picks but agree with Nick that Goggins is a lot of hype. Personally, I can’t get behind someone who proudly says he hates to run, yet is known for doing so.

  8. 8 Speedgoat Karl

The one thing I don’t really agree with at HURT, is the policy of bailing at 100k and getting credit for it when you sign up for 100 miles. Even I fell victim to that. Although I was not thinking, “great I finished and won a 100k”. I could care less for getting credit for that and holding the 100k record. Matt Estes was ahead of me that day at 100k. He, in reality holds the 100k record as well as the 100 mile record. He was about 12 minutes ahead of me……..but it is what it is. It does not count in my stack of wins either…it’s simply a DNF in my mind

  9. 9 Joe Kulak

Agreed on the points above. It’s Geoff’s to lose. He’ll take it by 4+ hours. Estes’ record will remain.

    Karl,

Think you nailed it pretty good. Feel bad that you didn’t mention me. The trails will be difficult. However with that said I expect a 35% finish rate. We have made the 100 km, more difficult in that they have to run to Paradise Park (trying to coax them to finish). Wish you were out here so I could run a few feet with you when you would lap me. Much aloha.

Amazing run! Course record of 20:28!!

Show the love on Geoff’s blog:

Wow! Way to go Geoff. He is flat out tough. Looks like that “some over-rated” guy (Goggins) is on his way to a 2nd or 3rd place finish. Way to go David. No matter what they say, you are a fine person and one hell of a runner. Also, wanted to point out that Zach Ginerach from Illinois is on his way to a possible top 10 finish as well.

  13. 13 geoff roes

thanks for the props karl, but you’d only need to consult ur mag. to see that there are 15 guys who had better years than me last year and at least 15 performances that were better than my wasatch.

  14. 14 AJW

Great run by Geoff! Of course, I’m not surprised as I saw first-hand what he could do at WF!

    AJW

  15. 15 Speedgoat Karl

And his Wasatch run really wasn’t super fast. It was solid of course, usually if someone can run 20 hours at Wasatch, then they can run anything fast. They just have to nail it on that specific day. 20 hours is only a 12 minute mile right?

  16. 16 Vic

I am by no means trying to kiss Goggins’s butt, however, I think it’s important to point out a couple of things about the guy….
His finish time of 25:27 shows that he’s obviously lived up to his “hype”. before this HURT, only 2 people in history of the race had ever even broke 24 hours and only only 2 others that have broken 26 hours.
Also, I don’t know what all you know about Goggins, but he deffinately should be “hyped” in my book. Anyone that does 10 100 mile races, 7 50’s, and 3 50ks in one year is one hell of a runner. Not to mention 4 of those 100’s were back to back weekends.(Plain 100, AC 100, Bear 100, and leadville a couple weeks before) And….. He finished the year breaking a record at ultra centric 48 hour run by runing over 200 miles.
    He’s over rated Huh?

  17. 17 Lance

Great follow up on David Goggins. I couldn’t agree more. This guy has a bigger resume in Ultra’s than most runners do in their entire lives. And…..He’s only been doing his stuff since November 2005! Not to mention, he was never a runner, he was a 280lb weight lifter. GO GOGGINS. Great job at HURT! Way to tear up the course! Good luck in RAAM this year. I’ll be following you online.

  18. 18 Sara

Not to be too much of a chic here…..but, If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
David Goggins is an amazing human and is the most unselfish man I have met in my life. Everything he does, is for someone else. Thanks for all your inspiration David. Keep pushing and forget about the negative people!

  19. 19 Speedgoat Karl

I know David Goggins well, and he is a first class individual. He would be the first person to say he’s not the fastest, he knows that. He pushes himself beyond what is comprehendable to most, and that’s what makes him a star. In ultrarunning, even the elite runners don’t run fast, we just run all day…at least the 100 milers.

Think of those involved with his charity that he runs for, I am sure they think he’s not all hype.

It’s OK to be a chick Sara! look at how many people were negative to me when I ran the AT. I got heckled because I stopped because of injury, but then went on to complete the beast that the AT is. People just don’t understand ultrarunning and what it really is. I could have easily gone home and responded to all the heckling, I chose to crank up the tunes and not be bothered.

Those that heckle should stay in the back of the pack where they belong, so us in front can’t hear them, or maybe we’ll just tune them out with an ipod…….I like that idea :-)
