A little Hiatus to Disneyland!

Tomorrow morning begins a 5 day backpack trip to the infamous Wind River Range in Wyoming.  No mountain range compares to this one for prime backpacking and fly fishing.  I’ll be eating lunkers in no time!

After this week’s Jupiter Peak Steeplechase 16 miler, I came home with some neuritis in my left foot.  The 3rd and 4th toe are numb, but feel ok walking around.  I’ll wear my nice soft La Sportiva Wildcat’s for the adventure, protecting my toes from further damage.   Hopefully this won’t create any issues in 4 weeks when the Wasatch 100 comes into play.  Do bad things come in 3’s?…maybe.  While sitting on my couch watching Mr. Woods win again, a yellowjacket decided he’d sting me. This ain’t good for me, my arm is swollen, I broke out in hives, and my arm itches like hell.  So now what’s next?  Hopefully nothing.  I keep telling myself, “it’ll go away”.

Let’s hope 5 days walking around the Winds will cure all issues.

On another note, I’ve teamed up with Sherpa Fit in NY to start running some guided mountain and desert running tours of Utah and surrounding states.  We plan to run 3 of them a year.  Spring, Summer and Fall trips.  The summer trip may just be in the Wind River Range.  I’ll be scoping it out this week.  During winter months, guided ski tours will also come into play for anyone who is interested in finding all the cool spots to ski…local style.  Not all locals tell where the stashes are, we will!

ON RACE NOTES:

The leadville 100 is coming the following weekend, I’ll have odds for that one when I return, we’ll see if Mr. Krupicka can rack up win #3 at the “Race across the sky”.

Check out Backcountry.com for sweet deals on summer stuff now. Summer is almost over and the gear will be flying off the shelves, time to bust a move.

Look for the Leadville 100 odds Wednesday morning and a brief summary of our epic 5-day pack trip in the Wind River Mountains.

    Karl,

Have fun backpacking in the Winds and take care of that foot. That range is among the best in the world and there’s a reason NOLS is headquartered there.

And, on Leadville, obviously Tony is in a world by himself but the race for places 2-5 could be really interesting.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I’m trying a pair of those poles you used at Hardrock when I drag my ass over Hope and Sugarloaf. Could be interesting!

More important on Hope pass cuz’ it’s steeper. I think you’ll find them useful. Better than a mule!

    Karl,

Enjoy the Winds–some of the finest wilderness ultrarunning anywhere! And the golden trout in the lakes just below Titcomb basin are the best eating I’ve ever found.

Winds are great. Peter set the FKT on Gannett last week - a notable achievement on a notable peak:

Like Andy says, Tony is gone if he’s healthy. “Gaté, gaté, paragaté as they say in Sanskrit.

    Have fun!

You need to get in touch with Creighton King to really find out about the fkt’s in the Wind’s. Creighton and Paul Brennen were running some real fast routes twenty years ago but never published their reports.

I wonder if Matt C has ever done any other 100 besides the LT. I know he did it twice with the second time being the current record. Too bad he does not race more but he obvioulsy knows what he is focused on, the PPM and the Barr Trail. Nice to see him in the NF final the last two years, I wish we saw him more agianst mainstreaming ultra dudes like you an AK, KS,HK and so many others. Rummers on your level leave me incredulous!

Ohhh, guided mountain running by the goat legend himself?! Would we have to keep up? I just got back from CO, and my Nebraska legs revolted on a couple of those climbs, but I had the time of my life. I know what I’m asking for my bday…

    Karl-

What is the name of the brand of poles that you use?

    Have a great retreat -

great fishing there. I know of a couple honey holes. I’d tell ya, but then I’d have to shoot ya. Also some nice streams near the Big Horns. Enjoy, and don’t hook yourself.

Jamie, Black Diamond’s lightest poles are what I used at Hardrock. Not sure of the exact name as Roch Horton let me borrow his. I currently don’t own a pair of my own yet!

Caught 12 10-14″ trout! Where? Yah right, but honestly, they are everywhere in the Winds, and yah, the Golden trout at Mistake Lake are the best around…I know that place too.

Curtis, It would be cool to contact Creighton and Paul. I know both of them now, but in the Winds, I don’t really need a map, so I know my way around as far as running and backpacking. I would love to know the roundtrip record for Fremont from Elkhart and back?

    Any help on that?

I believe Matt C has only run Leadville twice in terms of 100s. He lives for Pikes Peak and essentially nothing else…….which is ok. It’s too bad he doesn’t dip into ultras more often, he would dominate like no other. He tends to go for the money instead, which I think is a good thing for him as he can make a living winning little $1000 races. Ultras have no money, even the US championships don’t really pay much…..less or equal to the Teva Mountain Games 10k….which is a shame.

    The trout were tasty!!

Thanks Karl! I have Black Diamond too and may try to use them to get me over Hope this weekend! They seem to work for you :)! Enjoy your trip!

I meant runners above, not rummers!
