Just when you thought it couldn’t get any harder…..think again! I just finished working on a new “idea” I had. I was out running yesterday and figured it would be safer for 300 runners to ascent Baldy from the Mineral Basin side, instead of descending down the nasty, rocky, Chausy chute. So, instead of running over to Baldy at mile 9, we will descend via the Bookends singletrack (the way we came back up to the tunnel in 2011) to Larry’s Hole, run the “Mary Ellen Loop” as always, back to Larry’s Hole. And here’s the fun part, a 1900′ climb in 1.3 miles to the summit of Baldy at about mile 22 ish, instead of the tame singletrack up the Bookends. We’ll reach the Tunnel aid station after traversing the Baldy Ridge heading back towards Hidden Peak. Why would Ido such a thing? Because it wasn’t hard [...]

Well, the boys and girls are all a few hours from toe-ing the line with some of the best trail runners on earth. Will the curse of Americans continue, running anywhere off our own soil? I doubt it,but it still remains to be seen. It’s only 50 miles ish, so we won’t see drops, too short for that. Check out Bryon Powells’ yack on who’s running here. He’s got all the lowdown….well at least most of it. He’s over there too, so we can get that twitter feed thing. This one is gonna be a burner, just like the Speedgoat 50k in July…..which happens to have only 20 ish spots left. Better get on it. Speedgoatkarl’s 100 mile blend, now on sale! 20% off and free shipping if you order the 3 pounder. Go to www.jamesoncoffee.com, and use the code SGK100. Enjoy

For the first time since 2000 (when I had a bulging disc) I decided to bug out of the Ice Age 50 mile next weekend. It’s not like me to do something like this, but I’m feeling the need to “get my vert on” and start running and hiking uphill, endlessly, till I can’t go up anymore. I’ve been running on a suspect “inflamed nerve” between my 3rd and 4th toe since last November. They call that “Mortons Neuroma”. I’m not really at the “oma” stage, it’s just been numb for about 6 months now, and it’s about time this thing calmed down, through not forcing myself to have fun and race as much. A few weeks ago, I took a needle to the foot with a shot of cortisone. I know, lots of folks out there will say that’s terrible for me, and I am risking further damage. My [...]

So I’m gonna go run Zane Grey this weekend. Looks to be a steamer, somewhere around 90 degrees. There’s nothing like traversing below the Mogollon Rim near Payson, AZ. No trail or race, that I can speak of, is any more technical than this one. It is pure ugliness. Just the way I like it. Hopefully this year I won’t come home with a broken arm. No other race is quite like this one. 1. Joe Grant, Phenomenal technical runner, he should run away. Hopefully he won’t run the wrong way, Zane Grey….everyone gets a little lost. 2. Speedgoat, It’s the best possible course for me being so technical, I’m pretty sure I can run 8:30 ish if my foot doesn’t blow a gasket, but that’s another story. It might stop me in my tracks at mile 8,we’ll see. 3. Catlow Shipek, I’ve heard alot about him, now’s [...]

The Lake Sonoma 50 mile will easily be the most competitive “early season” 50 mile. The field is stacked deep. John Medinger over at Ultrarunning Mag has assembled a stout list of trail runners, racing for some fine brew at the finish line. It’s sure to be nuts up front. A peleton may even form, something we rarely see in Ultrarunning. Of course, it’ll be men up front, but the women’s field should not be overlooked either. Although it’s not nearly as deep as the men, it’s deep enough to make it a great competition. Although, I’m not sure if there will be any beer left for the ladies with all these boys in front. It’s been a while, but here goes my odds: Men’s Race: 1. Dave Mackey 3-1. It’s his turn to come out on top. It’s been what, one race since he hasn’t won something?
This weekend, well Friday (cuz’ we’re in Utah) I’ll be running the Antelope Island 100 mile. This will be my second 100 this year. I’m not really sure what to expect, but feel pretty good physically to run around 15 hours. That, of course, is if all goes well. I’ve had off and on battles with Neuritis in my left foot, and it’s been giving me a little grief lately. Sure sounds like a pre-race excuse eh? Not really, but it’ll be interesting to see if I can work this one out. In my favor is the course being almost flat. Downhill is a little sketchy, uphill is good and flat is fine too, but cranking downhill could cause the feeling of putting the wet finger in the outlet. It’s not pretty when that happens. We’ll see Dan Vega proves to be the stiffest competition, with a few other faster [...]

So, once again, it’s been forever for me to put together a new post. The Chuckanut 50k is quite stacked, so I figured I’d better get on it. Not gonna do odds on this one, cuz” way too many guys and and gals in the field I don’t know. I still think I can guess or “predict” who will win it,or at least come close. It’s pretty clear that we have two real fast road marathoners in Max King and Jason Loutit. Both these guys have tremendous speed and will do some damage on the first 6 miles and the last 6. However, it’s not all a dirt road race. Max, at least in my opinion has a better mountain running background than Jason. Jason won HURT and ran a decent time there, but HURT is a slog fest with lots of hiking. Max is fast on everything, so [...]

Once again, a bit behind in creating some masterful post. This past weekend brought me to the Red Hot 50k down in Moab, Utah. The competition here is usually pretty solid, this year was no different. I had no real goals this time around, it being only two weeks after running 14:17 at the Rocky Raccoon 100, what could I expect here, maybe 4:45? Seems as though the auto-pilot continues to work even at my ripe old age of 44. I ended up 3rd in 4:19.43, pretty close to my best time of 4:13 ish. Kevin Koch won and Eric Bohn took second, Kevin ran around 4:11, I was too busy socializing to check the exact time. I ran every step of the course, which was goal #1, it felt easy and I am encouraged heading into my next race, the Antelope Island 100 in 5 weeks. On another fabulous [...]
