Let the “Bunny meter” grow 25
Finally we’ve got a 100 mile race with a real purse! The “Goal” is to bring the purse to $100,000, where the world’s best 100 mile runners can chase each other around Steamboat, Colorado, and actually go home with some real money to pay the mortgage, or perhaps even buy a car. The 100k is not yet set in stone. 10k is set in stone at the moment, and the remaining 90k will be raised through sponsors, entry fees (yah, I know, some folks balk at that), and perhaps some donations from fine folks who want to see a real race, with real carnage, all because of money. Everyone likes money, everyone likes schwag, everyone likes to win a prize. We can’t deny it, it’s what life is. For most folks, unfortunately, it’s about money, you gotta have some to earn a living. Ultrarunners need to earn a living too. If a basketball or football player can earn 10 million bucks in a single season, why can’t us ultrarunners, who work ALOT harder earn a little dinero too. Perhaps one of those b-ball players could donate the entire purse. Shit, they wouldn’t even miss it.
What’s the real beauty of this race? It’s in Steamboat, Colorado. Put on by a real race director, with real experience, and a real passion to drive the sport to a new level. What does this really mean? Not really a whole lot. A big pile of cash will be donated to local charities in Steamboat and neighboring communities. A place where they need the money most. That is very cool. This is not a “non-profit” type organization, where the RD’s get a salary and say they don’t make money so they can benefit on the tax form. The RD’s are not in this to make money, they are in this to see a real big dance, some real carngage, and a few really happy smiles on the top 5 guys and gals who cross the finish line.
And then there’s the rest of the field. The elite field runs for the money. The “tortoise field” runs for some money, but all the schwag, just like a normal 100 mile run. We all pay the entry fee, elites and non-elites. It wouldn’t be fair to comp any elites if some of prize money comes from entry fees. What’s really cool is the elite field will start 5 hours after the “tortoise” field, allowing those slower folks to watch the race evolve. Some folks don’t care about that either, but I can assure you, when some 10 guys go running by 65 miles into the race, it’ll be cool to see what happens after that, where the real race begins.
With so many 100 mile races now in the US, this one will hopefully raise the bar in terms of cash prizes. If other sports can have cash prizes, why can’t we?
And, lastly, what we WILL see at this race, is beer, fine food, and camaraderie at the finish line, with all the “hares”. This ain’t no bullshit where regular folks can’t hang out with the best in the business, cuz’ the hares like beer too!
We all know there will be some naysayers on this, talking about how the sport is “grass roots”, but I can assure you, the grass roots approach is still there, it just comes with a big check at the end, and it’s not going in the RD’s pocket at this one.
The website for the big dance (nope, it’s not a “championship”) is coming soon. I’ll post it here when it’s up, so stay tuned for more info on the Steamboat 100, coming soon! Yippity doo, it’s here…
In the meantime, keep in mind, the Speedgoat 50k entries will go online on January 1. Our entry fee went up a little, only to give a better schwag bag for ALL runners. Patagonia, Drymax, and Speedgoatkarl’s 100 mile blend for everyone. Pretty hard to beat that! Not to mention First Endurance, Ryders Eyewear and Ultraspire are on board as sponsors already. Let the games begin for 2012!
Lastly, I’m officially 0-4 in the Western States Lottery, I”ll certainly be staying away from Vegas in the near future. Kinda a bummer as my goal was to go after Neal Gorman’s Grand Slam record. I guess it’ll have to remain safe for yet another year….unless Mr. Wardian gives it a go…… I guess not getting in Western States was a good thing, cuz’ now I can run the two best races this summer, Hardrock and Steamboat, the real Colorado double.
For more yack on the Steamboat 100, go vist Irunfar, I think comments are up to about 150….some of it’s pretty entertaining!

Sorry to hear about WS, Karl. I am really pumped about the Hardrock lineup though – it will be fun to follow.
Goat, it seems we both want what each other has. You want the GS record. I want 31 x 100 mile wins. Wait a minute… that’s not what I mean. : ) You want [my] a WS entry. I want [your] a Hardrock entry. Alas, a trade ain’t likely!
Train hard for Hardrock, bud. It’ll be your toughest comp there ever I bet. But we all know you have what it takes. After all, you wrote the textbook. First edition.
Interesting story, the bunny race. I’m sure people will be curious to see what $ figure the meter reaches come September.
Ho ho ho… Merry xmas.
Neal
Thanks for the update, Karl. Steamboat’s a great town and this sounds like a hell of a good format. Can’t wait to learn more.
Hardrock in July, Steamboat in September. That leaves August wide open for you now…
Gary, unfortunately, I won’t be making the Tahoe Rim assault.
With the Steamboat race, I would rather go in with fresh legs, rather than just run another 100 like always. This way I’ll have the best chance possible to make some dinero. Running 100 mid speed is easy, top speed needs a little rest.
Ive seen many little clicky groups of “fast” guys at race finishes. You seem to hang out with anyone who wants to chat (especially over a beer). Down to earth and call it like you see it. Admirable.
Karl,
I’m so excited to hear about the 100,000.00 purse. It’s about time. I know that as a ultra hobbiest, We bust our rear ends out their. let the purse money keep rising
do you have to qualify? Is this race gonna be a qualifier for others (Hardrock).
No qualifications needed to enter except a willingness to drink beer with Karl at the finish. And we’re working on making it a qualifier for Hardrock and WS.
So does this mean no SpeedGoat 100 in Snowbird? I’d sign up for that in a minute. No disrespect but I’m not very interested in a tame mountain 100 in Steamboat. Since I don’t have the speed I prefer the increased difficulty. But that’s just me. Will still be fun to follow the Steamboat 100; should be a barn burner!
No disrespect either, but we’re still working on the course. Course we’re looking at right now will have about 22,000 feet of vertical and an awful of running at 9,000 feet. At my age, that’s not all that tame.
Again, no disrespect but that is still tame compared to Hardrock. I’m sure Steamboat 100 will be an awesome event, very scenic, very tough, but once you’ve had a taste of the Hardrock it’s hard not to compare all other 100s to it. There are many 100s that sport total climb in the 18-22k range and a lot that have a fair amount of running at elevation. I just personally would like to see more Hardrock-Like events for those of us who want these types of post-graduate 100 mile challenges AND how don’t want to work their way through lotteries all the time. You’d be surprised at what the demand would be. Go crazy, make the Steamboat 100 a real beast!
I know. I’ve started Hardrock 5 times, and got lost 3 of them. But, if all you’re considering is elevation, everything is tame compared to Hardrock. The again I can’t tell you how many people I know have finished Hardrock but haven’t managed Leadville, or Western.
Elevation is only one factor. Net elevation gain and difficult route choice are other huge factors just look at HURT 100 as an example… Why not make some more difficult events? I get into this argument all the time even at our local running club level when they want to create new 5k, 10k routes. There are so many garden variety, flat races around I say why don’t we instead design a really tough 5 or 10k route and really bill it as such, “Toughest road 5k in the South” or something like that. So when I see a “new” event taking shape and input I always like to push to make the event truly unique; why not make it really tough?
No speedgoat 100….this year….I may try and incorporate it at the same time as the 50k in 2013. This way it won’t interfere with Steamboat, and we can have a great double of races with prize money.
It’ll happen Rob, be patient. I agree on a harder course, we’re working on making the Steamboat a good tough one at the end. Stay tuned on that.
I guess having it the same day at the 50K is better than nothing, but I want to run both races. Maybe a certain tattooed friend of ours will be qualified to run a 100 miler by then.
Hey Karl,
That’s great news you are running this race. You and all the ultra athletes deserve a lot more and hopefully we will see bigger races with great prizes and coverage.
On a less exciting note, it would have been awesome to see you in WS and Kilian in Hardrock.
Cheers,
André
You better be careful what you wish for, bigger pond comes bigger fish! If only I was that bigger fish and could grab that sweet purse.
Would I get a free bag of your coffee if you wouldn’t be able to catch me? I’ll bring some Canadian brew if (duh) you catch me!
Moogy, come run the Steamboat race, all runners will get some coffee of mine. I may be the first “sponsor” of the race. I can probably swing an extra bag for ya.
Hoping to be in CO this summer…looking forward to possibly meeting you
hey rob y… why not run a flat 100 (rr100 or lean horse) in under 14 hours… that would give you an ultra phd… i understand the desire for difficult, but you can also run harder… just saying… (sorry karl, I know that you prefer hardcore, as opposed to track meet, but I also know that you are headed back to rr100… to try and break 14 hours…) if the wardian vs. mackey debate is any indicator, there is a new age on the horizon…
Jonathan, with all do respect, I do “run hard” for me, look me up. I’m obviously not as talented or dedicated as the ultra-pros but I’ve done alright in my 16 year ultra career. But the attitude of “why not just run X faster” is besides the point, my point remains the same, there is a demand for more Hardrock-like events so why not create more Hardrock-like events? What an venue may lack in terms of highest elevation points can more than makeup for by ramping up the net elevation change and route choice for difficult footing. I.e. look at HURT 100…
rob y…….alabama bad boy! love it! scar north to south in may brother!
Karl,
I have a problem with Steamboat Springs being the location for this so called “super race.” Let me re-state, I think this type of course will not determine who is the best 100 mile trail runner. Running a race at 6,000 to 9,000 ft. elevation is a major advantage for those that live at altitude. Running a race at a much lower elevation with just as much of climb and technical trails would be a more neutral location for a “super race.”
