Had to bug out
For the first time since 2000 (when I had a bulging disc) I decided to bug out of the Ice Age 50 mile next weekend. It’s not like me to do something like this, but I’m feeling the need to “get my vert on” and start running and hiking uphill, endlessly, till I can’t go up anymore. I’ve been running on a suspect “inflamed nerve” between my 3rd and 4th toe since last November. They call that “Mortons Neuroma”. I’m not really at the “oma” stage, it’s just been numb for about 6 months now, and it’s about time this thing calmed down, through not forcing myself to have fun and race as much. A few weeks ago, I took a needle to the foot with a shot of cortisone. I know, lots of folks out there will say that’s terrible for me, and I am risking further damage. My Doctor, Russ Toronto is a magician with a needle, and guess what? my foot continues to improve daily now, even after the Zane Grey 50 on April 21. It is almost to the point where I can’t feel the inflammation under my toes on the hardwood floor. If you’ve ever had this condition, you know what I’m talking about. My last ditch effort to “cure” this thing was to hike up Mt. Olympus here in SLC. Mt. Olympus is a 4200′ climb in 3.2 miles on rough, rocky trail. Hiking up has always been fine, but the downhill has been the problem. I ran all the way down Mt. Olympus with NO pain (except screaming quads). Since that day on Olympus, I’ve gained nearly 13k in just a few days. Not really alot, but very encouraging when it comes to this sillyness. The Pocatello 50 is up next, and with lots of vertical there, I’ll be going up and down the Wasatch Front endlessly now….if my foot holds up. I hate injuries…..
If you haven’t ordered any of my fine blend of coffee, now’s the chance to get 20% off with FREE SHIPPING if you order 3 one pound bags, or one 3lb bag.! Why is this cool? Because when buying one bag for yourself over the internet, shipping costs make it expensive, more like 18+ bucks a bag. That’s alot for coffee. Normally 12 bucks a bag, with 20% off, it’s 9.60 each and free shipping. A steal in the bean market. go to www.jamesoncoffee.com and use the code SGK100. It’s only good till May 31. Sweet!
This week we have the Miwok 100k, although I didn’t do much of any preview of this, it’s sure to be a stellar race as always. I’ll put up a link to results when I hear them. Follow the race here.
In the honor of John Maack, a great friend of ours who has been recently diagnosed with Lymphoma and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, Troy Olson and a few friends have created a 50k in the trails of Corner Canyon on August 11th this year. It’ll be a heater for sure, so come out and “pretend” you are suffering and support John, ALL the proceeds will go to John and his family for medical costs. Check out John’s progress here
Lastly, the Squaw Peak 50 is digging for volunteers, if you need some trail time, or just want to help out a great race near Provo, contact John Bozung at 801-808-4222 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org for info. Both aid stations where he needs help are in very cool locations, it’ll be fun.
I’m off to go get me some vert….
